Horezu, Vâlcea, April 05, 2025 – In the quiet village of Horezu, known for its traditional pottery, a chicken has become an overnight local celebrity, not for its eggs, but for its absolutely unexpected musical “talent.” Coco, an ordinary, common breed hen, has started to “sing” recognizable fragments of 80s pop and rock songs, astonishing both her owners and anyone who hears her.

The owner, Mr. Ion Păunescu, a 67-year-old farmer, was amazed to discover Coco’s unusual abilities about a week ago. “Initially, I thought I was getting old and starting to hear things,” says Mr. Păunescu, smiling. “But then I clearly heard it. It’s not an ordinary clucking, but a kind of strange, rhythmic modulation that strikingly resembles some old radio tunes. You’d swear it’s a ‘chicken-style’ reinterpretation of Michael Jackson or ABBA.”

Witnesses confirm the phenomenon. Neighbors and relatives who visited Mr. Păunescu’s farm were equally perplexed. “I laughed until I cried when I first heard her,” says Maria Drăgan, a neighbor. “I’m convinced I recognized the chorus from ‘Billie Jean’ and then something from Modern Talking. It’s incredible!”

Ornithology specialists, though skeptical, were also intrigued. “It’s an extremely rare, if not unique, case,” explains Dr. Elena Stoica, a researcher at the Faculty of Biology. “Birds can imitate sounds, but it’s usually words or noises from their environment. Imitating complex musical structures, like melodies, is almost impossible for a chicken. It might be a combination of random sounds interpreted by the human ear, or simply an inexplicable phenomenon for now.”

Meanwhile, Coco is enjoying her new fame. The “singing” hen quickly became a local attraction, and videos of her have started circulating online, sparking users’ curiosity and amusement. It remains to be seen whether Coco’s musical talent will persist or if it’s just a fleeting phase, a bizarre and amusing moment in Horezu’s rural life.
